On having the courage to build less

It’s tempting to build in more features.

Building more is a reaction to fear.

Fear that you won’t provide enough.

Having the courage to build less has a number of benefits:

  • Cheaper to build
  • Faster to market
  • Minimizes the amount of unvalidated assumptions (every MVP has a confidence factor, but it’s impossible to reach 100% confidence)
  • Increases the % confidence in future releases (because their informed by real-world, real-user feedback)
  • Increases velocity of evolution/iteration (feedback loops are tighter, faster, and more accurate than pre-launch ones)
